And Melanie was ready to do exactly that as she crawled into the tiny bed in her tiny studio apartment, music in her ears so that she didn’t have to listen to her neighbors’ nightly escapades ( which were so horrific sounding she thought someone was getting murdered the first time she had heard them ). Her body was exhausted, feeling like it weighed twice as much as it did, and keeping her eyes open had been a chore which only served to make them burn; so of course she thought she’d be ready to go to bed.
Laying herself down on the bed, Melanie got herself comfortable and started to drift off when her brain made what would prove to be the first of many attempts to force her to once again stay awake throughout the night. The first were trains of thought that would run long enough for her to try and focus on them and then they would disappear, like a teenager ding-dong ditching their neighbor’s house. After…well…after a while she managed to ignore it and fell into a sleep that was filled with night terrors and constant tossing and turning on a small bed, all of which ultimately led to Melanie finding herself falling off the bed and hitting the floor.
Her body landed with a heavy, bone jarring thud, her hip bone and elbow connecting with the floor and she just…lay there, rolling onto her back and staring up at the dark ceiling and silently cursing. All the while her tongue was held between her teeth to stop herself from actually screaming into the darkness filled apartment. Just because Melanie’s neighbors’ liked to have loud, raucous sex that kept people awake didn’t mean that she felt like waking everyone up with her frustration…and pain. Once again, however, the dark haired hybrid found herself wide awake and unable to sleep. Beautiful.
Rolling onto her stomach, Melanie pushed herself up into a pushup like position and got up onto her feet, changing out of her pajamas and pulling on clothes, leaving the apartment. She didn’t really think that a night walk was going to do her any good, but it was going to get her out of the house and that was all she really needed. Street lamps lit the dark sidewalks, the dim and yellowish light stretching for a couple feet in every direction and then leaving four or five feet of darkness before it was illuminated by yet another street lamp. The night air wasn’t particularly cold, in fact it felt rather nice, and for a moment it passed Melanie’s mind that she was back home where all the bullshit in her life had started.
Growing up, Velveteen hadn’t been that bad of a place to live, in fact it could have been enjoyable if it hadn’t been for her father, but it was different than Texas had been. Her feet carried her along and she stopped when she realized she was at the park. Standing on the dark sidewalk, she tilted her head a bit and then shrugged, jumping the short fence she was next to and wandered over to the swings, dropping her bag and sitting down. It had been years since she had even sat on a swing, and she pushed her legs a little, not that it did much. Her legs were too long and the seat was too low, making it incredibly awkward for her to try and push herself, and instead she just sat there, rocking slowly back and forth a little.
“Sitting outside, in the dark, all by yourself. Are you asking for trouble?” And so it starts. That annoying and nagging voice in the back of her head started jabbering at her and Melanie ran a hand through her hair. “Don’t try ignoring me, I know you can hear me~” But she was going to ignore it, because the alternate choice was acknowledging it and if she did that she’d have to talk to herself, and even if she was alone she didn’t really feel like making herself feel more crazy than she already was. There was a soft noise behind her and Melanie’s head turned to the side, her own hair obscuring her view a bit. No, she preferred to think of wandering the streets as an...adventure. Life was a journey, it begins with one step and all that Chinese proverb jazz. These thoughts kept her secure as she walked down the streets, lit by the sallow light of streetlamps. She hadn't been living here long at all, so she enjoyed getting los--no, no, going on adventures. There was a lot to be discovered in this town. And it was a town, how pleasant and quaint! She much preferred it over the city. Or maybe she didn't, she didn't like to measure one thing against another. She had liked the city for a lot of reasons, and she disliked it for some more. There was pros and cons to everything. Even this island. She could think of a few cons, even though they had nothing to do with the island itself. She'd rather focus on the pros, besides.
Noticing a wall coming up, she hopped up on it, arms out at her sides. Maybe she should shift, she'd find her apartment sooner. She loved that feeling of flying, of freedom, but she also liked the hunt. Maybe she wasn't actually searching for her apartment, maybe she just wanted to explore. Maybe she'd change her mind. Fickle, fickle. She was always impulsive, in the moment, it was difficult for her to explain the things she did. Like why she didn't drive her car to work, she preferred walking. Why she was considering an adventure when she'd just gotten off work. She was sure her shirt smelled like booze. At least she didn't have a uniform, it was just that shirt and shorts. Uncomfortably short shorts, but shorts nonetheless. They were much easier to pull on than jeans.
She jumped down from the low wall, the thud strangely loud in the nighttime. Humming softly, she continued to stroll, until she forgot that she was humming and slowly stopped, the opera aria dying in her throat. It took a moment to register that there was someone else around, and when she noticed the stranger, a grin lightened her face. "Oh, hello there!" she called out, ignoring the fact that this was a stranger and a possible danger to her. Brown bangs bounced around her face as she jogged up to the girl, taking in her eyes in the low light. They seemed almost black. "Are you also in search of adventure? I was looking for a companion, I had an idea, and oh, I don't know, gets lonely out here..." She looked away for a moment, as if seeing something, before turning back to her. "So, fellow nomad, do you wish to accompany me?"

A car passed by on the street, headlights illuminating the park for a brief second, and Melanie’s eyes reflected the light, much like what one would expect from a cat, turning a bright green for that brief second. Despite the fact that the light had only been there for a moment, it had been enough for her eyes to pick up on the figure; she ( definitely a she ) was small, probably a teenager at the very least, and Melanie was feeling quite a bit less threatened. Maybe not entirely, after all, since it was dark and most people didn’t exactly wander around at midnight.
She knew when the girl noticed her though because a light voice came from her in greeting and her pace quickened into a jog until she was near where Melanie was sitting. The park could have done with a few more lamp posts and lighting, which would help with sight, not that Melanie needed it. One of the things that she had given up when she let her guardian shifter in was a lack of color in the world; everything was more neutral and some colors were impossible to see at all ( made driving really interesting ), but at night? She was able to pick up on all of the facial features of the girl in front of her and Melanie tilted her head, a quizzical look on her face. “Are you also in search of adventure? I was looking for a companion, I had an idea, and oh, I don’t know, it gets lonely out here…”
Actually, Melanie was looking for sleep ( which she supposed could have been an adventure of its own really ), but with she wasn’t any closer to finding it than she had been when she had gone to bed the first time. “An adventure…? This late at night?” Melanie mused lightly, mostly to herself but also toward the other girl in some fashion. Generally speaking she saved her michevious nature for pick pocketing and bars when she was trying to get free drinks, but really, what was the harm in going out now and having a little bit of fun? "So, fellow nomad, do you wish to accompany me?”
A small smile played over Melanie’s lips and she hummed lightly, “well, I don’t have anything better to do, so I may as well. But first…what is your name? And just what kind of adventure did you have in mind?”

Yes, the body language said as much. Nell was adept at picking up the cues, she paid all her attention to the people around her. She tried to pay attention to everything since she didn't want to miss a thing, but her directional sense was still so lacking! It was a shame, really. She took the stranger's question as one that she should answer, and one she should answer with arm's spread wide and head tilted up, as if standing gaily in a downpour. "Why have an adventure just during the day?" she questioned. "There is so much at night that you might miss when you sleep, yanno?"
She remembered insomnia, still suffered from it to this day. Nell remembered all the problems it had caused, some of the worse things. She remembered Dr. Patel sliding the bottle over to her, she remembered that bottle in Evie's bedroom, she remembered it on the bathroom floor. Medication scared her, she hated it, but the man had convinced her to do it with the ever-convincing argument, "Do it for me." So she did it for him. And she regretted it. Didn't make her feel better, and he found out the hard way, after she ruined everything, broke things she couldn't fix. Destruction came at night, really, but she didn't tell Melanie this. Maybe she knew.
Nell clapped her hands when the girl agreed, and...a name? She wanted a name. In a paranoid train of thought, she almost gave her the last name too, as if to assure her that she had nothing to hide, that it was her real name, she was not a fugitive. Nothing more suspicious than acting suspicious, though. "My name is Nell," she introduced, waving her hand as if she were in front of a large group of people, about to present a speech. "And what about you?" she questioned. What kind of adventure. Nell turned on her heel and pivoted like a soldier, pointing her finger out. "The beach. Have you ever been to a beach at night? I haven't. But then again, don't really know how to get there." And she had a lighter in her pocket, and there was driftwood, and she wanted to see the ocean as much as possible. notes hope it's coolio~ tag anyone. <3 words idek. [/center]

Go and tell your white knight that he's handsome in hindsight, 'cause i don't want the next best thing. So i sing and hold my head down and i break these walls around me Sleep actually happened to be something that Melanie enjoyed when it wasn’t plagued by night terrors or fleeting, apparently what they said about not missing something until you didn’t have it was rather true. Melanie missed the days where she could sleep through the night; of course those days had been less than a year ago, so the insomnia that she was suffering from was, in some senses, relatively new. “Why have an adventure just during the day? There is so much at night that you might miss when you sleep, yanno?” The hybrid had a hard time arguing with that little piece of logic and she smiled, tilting her head a bit as she did so; it’d been a while since she had an adventure of any sorts, which made her feel rather old considering her relatively young age.
“My name is Nell.” Melanie smiled at her while standing up, brushing back her hair with one hand while straightening her shirt a bit. It was a pretty name, albeit a little unusual if you asked her, but she liked it. “And what about you?” She blinked, as if almost forgetting she had actually asked for introductions, or maybe like she had forgotten part of that was introducing yourself, but she pushed the thoughts away, “Melanie…or Mel if you prefer. I tend to respond to both.” There was a brief pause, as if she was going to say more, and in all actuality, Melanie had intended to say more, but then there had been that little voice in her head that told her she was close to rambling and really just needed to be quiet now.
She watched the younger girl pivot and point in a direction, her brain slowly bringing up a little map of the area, but before she could recall what destinations laid in that particular destination, she was speaking. “The beach. Have you ever been to the beach at night? I haven’t. But then again, don’t really know how to get there.” Melanie raised an eyebrow and bent down to pick up her bag, “I haven’t been to the beach at night, though I’m sure it’s gorgeous.” She loved the water and whenever she was at the beach she’d be in the water, however the evening was a tad chilly and she didn’t quite think that she’d be swimming that night. “If you don’t mind walking though, I can lead the way to the beach.”
Growing up in Velveteen, Melanie knew where everything was at, and even though she had been gone for almost two years, the city really hadn’t changed all that much. She had almost considered saying that they could grab her car, but Melanie didn’t actually feel like driving; walking was better for you anyway, right?
